It’s a Good Day

Let me first say that I really like Mike Lowell.  I like what he has done for the Red Sox.  He is a really good ball player and a really good team player.  I hope that, for his own sake, he gets traded somewhere that he can play everyday.  Maybe the Angels would be interested since they are going with that Wood kid at third.  beltre.jpgThat being said, I also really like Adrian Beltre.

He is going to be able to replace Lowell’s defense and I think that he will have a monster year at Fenway.  His production was down last year due to injuries but if he is healthy I think that he will do really well in a hitters’ ballpark like Fenway.

I don’t know if that is it for signings this off-season for the Red Sox but if it is I am satisfied with what we are going to be able to put on the field.  They say that pitching and defense wins championships.  I am hoping that these moves put the Sox in a position where we will be able to play for one this year.

In other Sox news, it looks like Ellsbury is moving over for Mike Cameron.  I like this move too.  I like Ellsbury’s range but his arm does leave a bit to be desired.  I think that the trio of Ellsbury, Cameron, and Drew could be one of the best outfields in baseball.  As usual I have optimistic hopes for the upcoming season.  I can’t wait to see how this off-season plays out on the field.

Please…Take Me Back

jason_bay.jpgAre you kidding me?  Jason Bay’s agent is, apparently, contacting the Sox about re-entering negotiations.  After walking away from negotiations in a huff the Jason Bay contigent seems to be coming back with it’s tail between it’s legs.  And all of this after Theo signed Mike Cameron.

I am really trying to process how I feel about all of this.  Was I happy to see Manny leave?  After all of the shennanigans, YES.  Was I happy to see Jason Bay come to Boston?  I am a Canadian and I do like what he brought to the team (stability and the willingness to play every day) so YES.  Do I want Bay back now?  NO.

He didn’t like the offer that the Sox presented him.  That’s fine.  He was offered more money for the same amount of years to play in Queens.  That’s all good too.  All of a sudden all of the big money talk has dried up and now Bay is stuck between a slightly lower paying contract in Boston (where he has a chance at World Series glory every year and a ballpark that is very accomodating to hitters) and a higher paycheck in New York (but the Metropolitans are not always a contending franchise and their ballpark is not conducive to hitters.)

It seems to me that Boston has made arrangements to replace Bay.  I think that Mike Cameron will do a fine job in left and I really don’t think that the Sox need to go and acquire another outfielder at this juncture.  We now have Hermida as a backup and plenty of options at DH so I fail to see how Bay fits in.

If I am the Sox upper management I am telling Bay to pound salt.  The offer was there and he decided not to take it.  Best of luck to you in New York and third or fourth place in the NL East.

I would be a little more sympathetic to the guy’s cause but all of this was brought on by greed.  This is the problem with today’s game.  So many players are only motivated by the almighty dollar…and then when the well seems to be running dry they try to come back and say, “oh…I really like playing in (whatever city)…maybe we can work something out.”  Well, Jason, if you are really willing to take a little less money why don’t you go back to the Pirates.  I am sure that their fans will love it.  You are already rich.  Why not do something for the game?

State of the Nation – Part II

Okay, apparently I was a little hasty with all of my, “what are my Sox doing?” talk of yesterday.  I was feeling a little emotionally high strung because I am getting used to cheering for a consistently good team and I am not ready for the Sox to slip back into mediocrity just yet.

Today things are looking a little bit better.  The Red Sox are supposed to be signing John Lackey.  This is good for a couple of reasons.  First, of course I want a gritty gamer like Lacky on my team.  He can only make our rotation better.  Second, if the Sox sign Lackey that means that they will have six men for five spots.  This brings forth a question:  are the Sox planning to trade one of their young starters for a position player that could strike fear in the hearts of all Yankee lovers?  Maybe.  This is just a theory but one of the players being discussed in possible trades with the Padres for one Adrian Gonzalez was Clay Buchholz.  I would be completely alright with going into 2010 with a rotation of Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Dice-K, and Wake and Adrian Gonzalez playing firstbase.

Please Santa, if I could have one thing for Christmas in my Red Stocking it would be…

                                          ADRIAN GONZALEZ

The Sox are also rumored to be in serious discussions with Mike Cameron.  If all of my wishful plans come to fruition our 2010 lineup will consist of:

c  – Victor Martinez

1b – Adrian Gonzalez

2b – Dustin Pedroia

3b – Youk

ss – Marco Scutaro

lf – Mike Cameron

cf – Jacoby Ellsbury

rf – JD Drew

dh – Big Papi

A lineup like this coupled with the new rotation and an already solid bullpen should be good for another playoff run.  Go Sox.
